<p><i>About Embroidery Art Embroidery Art was founded in 1999, Thames, New Zealand
by Maria Stables-Page. Maria started developing these truly magnificent pieces
of embroidery art, pushing embroidery beyond the realms of tradition. Out of
sheer passion for embroidery and art, her creativity naturally forged the two
disciplines. Maria's work has been accepted for a national exhibition in Wellington
and she regularly exhibits both in Thames and across New Zealand. She continues
to produce original embroidered art, usually having three pieces on the go at
any one time. Within the next couple of years, Maria will be offering workshops
in Embroidery Art, using her own talents as an artist to inspire others to create
their own original embroidery art. Maria Stables-Page I live at Matatoki, a
small village south of Thames in the North Island of New Zealand. My house is
surrounded by lush farmland and looks to the southern Coromandel Range. The
inspiration for my embroidery work is all around me. The hills always change
colour. They go soft pink as the sun sets. In bleak weather the cloud settles
into the valleys and turns the hills forty shades of grey. The pasture around
my house changes from green to gold with the seasons change. This is my inspiration.
I have embroidered since I was a little girl, taught to me by my grandmother
who is now 93. Naturally I started to follow patterns in tapestry, cross stitch
and crewel. My involvement with the Thames Valley Embroiderers Guild introduced
me to a wider world of embroidery techniques including hardanqer, blackwork,
kalocka, corn pad embroidery, silk painting, schawm, samplers and canvas work
to name a few. My latest works combine painted silk or canvas surfaces with
a mix of crewel and canvas free style embroidery. I don't use a pattern. I usually
see a finished piece in my head and work towards it. The piece just happens.
Once the colours are chosen the embroidery does itself. I embroider every day
stitching a couple of inches here an there as I try to fit in all sorts of other
exciting things into this life. I live with my husband Geoff, three cats Hambone
(aged 16), Rami (aged 6) and Giuseppe (aged 1), 40 year old cockatoo Freedie
and Gordie the goat (aged 14) on our lifestyle block. I work full time as a
registered raluer, do Kiaido Ryu Martial Arts, bird watch, hike and drive a
morris minor. But I am passionate about embroidery in all its forms and history.
I am foremost an embroiderer who does other things and not the other way around.
"Brown Dress " by Maria Stables-Page Canvas work embroidery on painted
canvas. These colours are inspired by the desert and the dress is simple in
style so the complexity of the stitches are emphasized. Size: 60cm x 50cm "City
of Auckland" by Maria Stables-Page Running stitch embroidery on calico
with painted wash sky and sea. Couched sea. Taken from a photo taken by the
embroiderer on a voyage from Auckland to Coromandel. (The bird is a true representation!)
Size: 30cm x 55cm "Green Triangles " by Maria Stables-Page Canvas
work with Tamari ball and painted suede. Mounted onto medium density fibreboard.
Inspiration from Miro the German painter. Size: 55cm x 45cm "State Highway
35" by Maria Stables-Page Predominantly straight stitches with some colonial
and French knots. This embroidery was copied from a photo in a New Zealand Geographic
Magazine. Sky is a painted wash. Size: 20cm x 25cm "Mauve Swirl" by
Maria Stables-Page A piece of surface stichery on calico mounted onto coloured
mat and medium density fibreboard. </i></p>
<p><i>"Poppies" by Maria Stables-Page Poppies is a repetitive design
spun on an axis. The stitched green ribbon pulls the design together. The poppies
are buttonholed wire sitting proud of the background work. Size: 30cm x 30cm.

<p><i>"Pulse" by Maria Stables-Page Canvas work embroidery with paua,
feathers and mother of pearl shells. Inspired by objects found in the natural
environment. Techniques used include wrapping dry pasta and couching. Size:
25cm x 60cm </i></p>
<p><i>"The Purple Coat" by Maria Stables-Page Canvas work embroidery
on painted canvas. Journey style illustrating colour and stitches used. </i></p>
<p><i>"Rose Leaves" by Maria Stables-Page Surface stitch embroidery
on black calico mounted onto thick card on medium density fibre board. I picked
a trio of rose leaves and free style stitched, shading light to dark. The one
block facing the opposite direction reflects that nature is not uniform. Size:
70cm x 50cm </i></p>
<p><i>"Four Panel Silk Painting" by Maria Stables-Page. Copper rods
top and bottom. Silk is backed onto different weight and coloured fabric to
give a different effect on each panel. Herring bone together between panels.
Variety of stitches including colonial knots and couching. Interesting dynamics
between the colour changes of the silk and the placement of the couched threads.

<p><i>"Thames Theme" by Maria Stables-Page Maria Stables-Page, of the
Thames Valley Embroiderers' Guild evening group and also a Thames Community
Board member, wanted to embrace everything about the natural landscape of Thames
into a vibrancy that would get the viewer excited about Thames itself. The design
shows the district's golden days reflected beneath the ferns and nikau of the
bush, the Thames river renowned for its delightful fish, the mighty kauri trunk,
Firth of Thames, Oyster Catchers, mudflats, beaches, mangroves and waterfalls.
